Welcome Address Delivered By: B.I.O. Essien, President of Lead City Voices (LCV)
Good afternoon, ladies
and Gentlemen. It is my privilege to welcome you to this occasion on behalf of
the Lead City community. We
have recognised that the great thing about life is when there is a definition
to it and a purpose to eliminate hikes of distortions and distractions. Lead
City Voices has come to make it happen and provide a qualitative, quantitative
and edifying disposal of a meaningful life to Nigerians and the world at large.
This is part of our contribution to national development.
Ours is a
university with the philosophy of Self-Reliance.
It’s not a mistake that you are here today to witness the grand finale of the
debate that has been going on for the past two days.
The students,
staff, visitors and guests that have attended so far can attest to the
competitiveness, creativity and confidence that the representatives of various
departments in our citadel of learning have displayed so far.
Ours is a
university that is committed to producing not just leaders of tomorrow but also
that of today. The series of debates organized by Lead City Voices is mainly to ensure that the students of Lead City University can rise to the
occasion at any point. This is against the assumption that many of our
university graduates in Nigeria cannot defend the certificate awarded them by
our higher institutions of learning when called upon.
This event is
also organized to reinvent the wheel that gave many of our past leaders the
opportunity to present their ideas and ingenuity to the public. It is not
possible to see a fast developing nation that does not have its organized
debate platforms where leaders in all fields of endeavours argue on national issues.
The
Intra-University debate so far has dwelt on various topics that affect our
society. The topic to be debated on today is no different. Five departments
will be going head to head on the topic – 100 years after amalgamation:
Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable. The aim at the end of the day is not which
department comes first but the amount of information, creativity and confidence
that will be on display by the representatives of each department. Also, it is
all about making a difference.
It is hoped that
the members of the press, visitors, staff and students present will leave more
enlightened and informed at the end. Once again, it is my privilege to welcome
you all to this event.
